Too Much of a Good thing

If your water treatment facility pumps water long distances, chlorine levels need to be higher to ensure proper disinfection at the end point. Hence, the closer you live to the facility, the higher the chlorine levels in your water. Excessive exposure to fluoride over a lifetime, can lead to bone fractures in adults, and in children under 8 can cause pitting of teeth.

Flouride

The practice of adding fluoride to drinking water is has a single goal: reduce tooth decay in the general population.

Chlorine

As a halogen, chlorine is a highly efficient disinfectant, and is added to public water supplies to kill disease-causing pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoans, that commonly grow in reservoirs, on the walls of water mains and in storage tanks.

What is Hard Water?

Hard water is water that has high mineral content (in contrast with "soft water," like rain water or distilled water). Hard water is formed when rain water percolates through deposits of limestone and chalk-containing minerals such as calcium and magnesium.

Hard Water Headaches

Hard water is a poor cleaner, requiring more soap and longer rinse cycles to get the same result as softer water. The same is true for soap and shampoo in the shower. Scale accumulation in a water heater not only reduces its life, but increases the time needed to heat water, wasting up to 30% more energy— so faucets are run longer as you wait for hot water, wasting water in addition to energy. Hard water also significantly reduces the lifespan of many appliances, like washing machines and dishwashers. It also leaves soap scum residue behind on everything— bathroom fixtures, shower doors, floors, even you.

Soft Water Advantage

Basically the advantages of soft water are the exact opposites of the disadvantages of hard water. Soft water takes less energy to heat, and extends the life of water heaters. It doesn’t adversely impact the lifespans of appliances like washing machines and dishwashers.

Normal water leaves mineral particles in the weave of most fabrics, making them hard and scratchy, causing them to look dull and dinge and breaking down the fabric more quickly. With a Culligan water softener, your laundry will come out softer fluffier, and your clothes will last longer.
